Regional Australia: Preparing for Climate Change

There is a plethora of information in the media about climate change, from carbon offsets and green tourism, to melting ice caps, peak oil, guilty tourism and emissions trading schemes – can you decipher what this will mean to you and your organisation?
Tourism organisations have told us they are keen to learn more about what the impacts of climate change will mean for them. The need for information on adapting to climate change, specific to Australian tourism, is a top priority in economic and infrastructure planning for the future our industry.

This workshop will:

  • Inform your organisation as to the most up to date news and strategies on how to deal with climate change on a regional level;
  • Demystify the range of predictions from best to worst case climate change scenarios so you know what you are planning for;
  • Explain the difference between the concepts of mitigation including ‘greening’ your organisation, and adaptation to the impacts of climate change;
  • Provide you with strategies to increase the resilience and agility of your organisation to respond to the threat of climate change

Destination Management Planning

Destination Management Planning has been highlighted by the DIISR as critical for the sustainable development and management of tourism destinations; and imperative for future sustainable industry growth and profitability.

The ARTRC recently completed Destination Management Plans for two of regional Australia’s most popular tourism destinations, Byron Bay, NSW and Daylesford, VIC.
In this interactive workshop, where participants can ask advice, pose questions and contribute their own experiences, we discuss the process and considerations for successful planning.

This workshop addresses:

  • The most important aspects of destination management planning
  • What constitutes best practice in the marketing, management and development of Australian tourism destinations
  • How to engage with regional tourism stakeholders on tourism development and marketing issues
  • Our recommendations to assist regional communities in planning for their tourism future

Domesticate: Secrets of the Australian Domestic Travel Market

In 2006 TNS Travel and Leisure in conjunction with founding Domesticate partner, Tourism Research Australia (TRA), conducted a study into the state of the Australian domestic travel market. Domestic tourism within Australia had shown a long- term decline. In contrast, international outbound tourism had shown growth as had discretionary spending on non-tourism items. There had been considerable debate as to the causes of this decline and most of the analysis produced was focused on the ‘what’ of the trend rather than the ‘why’. Where analysis of the tourism industry had been conducted, it was generally quantitative in nature. There was a lack of reliable information into consumer motivations on two key questions:

1. What was preventing Australians experiencing their own country?

2. What could encourage them to do so?

This workshop runs through findings from TNS Tourism Australia Domesticate 2008 which sets out to:

  • Equip key tourism stakeholders with the insight they need to get Australians travelling again as far as this is possible;
  • Do so in a way that makes the finding accessible and thus actionable;
  • Drill-down into critical issues; and
  • Equip stakeholders to make long-term strategic decisions by understanding the mindset of future consumers.

Keys to Successful Marketing with Digital Photography- Tricks of the trade from professional photographer, Paul Foley.

Those people involved in tourism marketing know that there is a continuing demand for large numbers of striking, attention grabbing images for use in promotion. However, those people are also aware of the associated costs. But what if you could do it yourself?

Paul Foley, an award winning photographer, will show participants how to ensure the best results from their photography, as well as giving participants an informed understanding of what level of photography should be undertaken and how to best brief a professional if one is required.

“Digital Photography is part of nearly every organisation. The perception that digital cameras make everything easy and automatic and that mistakes can be fixed up in the computer is a dangerous one that can often have detrimental effects on your image, branding and even legal standing," says Paul.

Paul has run a number of courses in conjunction with Tourism NSW, ACT Tourism and Capital Country Tourism. His workshops are aimed specifically toward the tourism industry and usually cost upwards of $3,000 per workshop.

This workshop will:

  • Help you get the most out of your digital photography
  • Be aimed directly toward the tourism industry and cover such topics as setting up the camera; creative composition and making best use of natural and flash lighting
  • Include written workbooks detailing workflows and procedures; and
  • Include a brief hands-on component to illustrate some of the techniques learnt

For further information about Paul Foley visit the Lightmoods website at or view Paul's online gallery here.
