The Forum Sessions

The ARTN has announced it will begin a monthly series of Forum Sessions, inviting guest ‘speakers’ to post news, ideas, reports or studies topical to regional tourism, and be available to answer your questions online. January’s Forum Session will see participants from the very successful Farm and Nature Tourism Program, talk about their experiences with the program and will be ready to discuss any questions you might have on WEDNESDAY 6 February 2008 between 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm.

The Farm and Nature Tourism Program continues to gain momentum as it is rolled out in regional destinations. Nineteen rural stakeholders from the Northern Rivers Region of NSW recently graduated from the program and will be available to speak to potential participants or interested parties online.

“The majority of the participants will proceed to business start up with an interesting mix of food value adding, on-farm accommodation, or tourism activity with nature or agriculture as the attraction” says Program Manager Rose Wright. The Northern Rivers pilot was a successful partnership between ARTRC, STCRC, NSW Department of State & Regional Development as well as Byron, Ballina, Clarence Valley, Kyogle and Lismore Councils.

Victoria has also come on board with Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges Regional Marketing partnering the Australian Regional Tourism Research Centre (ARTRC) to deliver the first phases of the Program, where 56 participants from 38 properties in the region attended the field day. Central Victoria Organic Growers Network has been granted funds to conduct the FANT program around the Echuca Region in 2008 as part of a grant to develop their network and new markets for their organic produce.

Tourism Tasmania has also committed to provide seed funding and to partner with the STCRC and ARTRC to pilot FANT in Tasmania.

Partnerships: sharing the risks and benefits

The Local Government and Shires Association of NSW (LGSA) is holding its third annual Tourism Conference in the Northern Rivers this March. Hosted by a Northern Rivers collaboration of Lismore City Council, Richmond Valley Council, Kyogle Council and Southern Cross University, the LGSA Tourism Conference will present a platform for councilors and council staff to meet and listen to experts and peers, and find out how other councils are engaging and managing their tourism industry.

To the theme of partnerships: sharing risks and benefits, the Conference will explore the topics of education and marketing, economic and environmental sustainability and culture and community.

Delegates will have a choice of three topic ‘streams’: the Regional City Stream, the Hinterland Stream and the Coastal Stream, all providing different and innovative examples of local government leading tourism development.

Want to win a Victorian Tourism Award but need a little help? Take the BEEP Test

The Beep Test is the brain child of Bindi Gove, Tourism and Events Industry Manager at the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) and Deputy Chair of the ARTN. It is based on the same principle used by the likes of the emergency services sector, which provides a base level of fitness requirement prior to progression in the recruitment process. Basically if you can’t pass The Beep Test it’s unlikely you’ll ever get any further in the process. The same principle applies to the Tourism Awards Beep Test.

Businesses are invited to provide answers to two of the questions as they appear in the Tourism Awards submissions. They are then invited to participate in a two hour writing workshop which provides direct feedback on responses. The Workshop is lead by Bindi Gove and uses support material from VECCI’s Regional Training Division including writing workbooks.

As a judge for the Victorian Tourism Awards for past two years, and having previously judged the NSW Tourism Awards and several regional tourism and business awards in both NSW and Victoria, Bindi has good inside knowledge of just what it takes to be considered for an award. And the results speak for themselves. The Tourism Awards Beep Test ran for the first time in Gippsland in 2007 resulting in a first time entrant to the State Tourism Awards, Lakes Entrance Waverly House Cottages, receiving the Ministers Encouragement Award, and two other beep test participants, Montford Manor & Limosa Rise receiving finalist awards.  Two other Beep Test entrants received a finalist award - Montford Manor & Limosa Rise

WHAT IS THE COST
The all inclusive cost of taking part in the Beep Test is $97.90 per business. This includes assessment and individualised feedback on responses, writing workshop, workbook material and catering.
