Sustainable Destinations

This year marks the third and final year of the $300,000 Sustainable Regional Tourism Destinations Project led by Dr Meredith Lawrence.

With a team of eight senior researchers from five universities around the country, the projects aim is to determine best practice for the sustainable development, marketing and management of regional tourism destinations in Australia, and is based upon research undertaken in 22 regional tourism destinations around the country.

To ensure this research results in meaningful benefits for industry, researchers will develop industry friendly toolkits and research extension activities to assist regional tourism destinations and regions in best practice planning initiatives.

Chair of the ARTN, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, states the Sustainable Regional Tourism Destinations Project is “the most important research project undertaken for the regional tourism industry in Australia and offers the prospect of accelerating the sustainability of the industry into the future”.

Sustainable Regional Tourism Destinations is a Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) funded project and is due for completion at the end of the year.

Maximising Productivity in Tourism and Hospitality

Remote Regional Tourism and Hospitality Labour Markets

Researchers will determine the factors which facilitate, and those which present a barrier to labour market productivity in remote and regional areas in a new research project.

This project, which will form the basis of a larger study, will examine the characteristics of regional tourism and hospitality industries labour markets. The project will provide an understanding of the distinctive features of two remote area labour markets and allow the identification of facilitators and barriers to maximising labour productivity in the tourism and hospitality sector in the northern regions of Australia.

This research project will be undertaken in Alice Springs (NT) and Fitzroy Crossing (WA), two well-known remote and regional tourism destinations. Findings are expected to be released later in the year.

Researching the Murray

The Campaspe Murray Infrastructure Gap Analysis Project is a research project being conducted by the ARTRC for the Shire of Campaspe, Murray Shire Council and Tourism Victoria.

The project purpose is threefold: identify and provide a current listing of tourism product across both Shires; identify gaps in current tourism product and recommend product development opportunities and investment attraction tools; and provide an Infrastructure Gap Analysis tool (or template) for use in other destinations.

On a recent visit to the region, project manager Nadine White met with the Shires' tourism stakeholders and also attended the Echuca Public Hearing into the Parliamentary Inquiry into Rural and Regional Tourism. The hearing provided an interesting overview of submissions to the inquiry that were specific to tourism in the region.

A recurring issue in the submissions was the negative impact of inaccurate media reports about the level of water in the Murray River at Echuca-Moama. Stakeholders were keen to ensure the public is aware that there is plenty of water in the river for all the usual tourist activities, including paddle-steamer cruises.
